Spetisbury Construction appointed to modernise Weymouth RNLI Lifeboat Station

We’re proud to share that Spetisbury Construction has been appointed by the RNLI to deliver the refurbishment of Weymouth Lifeboat Station on Nothe Parade. As a Dorset-based business, we’re pleased to be working on a landmark building that is so important to our local community.

A station with more than 150 years of history

Weymouth Lifeboat Station first opened in 1869 and has served the area ever since. This project is its most significant upgrade in over a century. The aim is a modern, efficient and accessible facility that keeps the character and heritage of the historic building.

What the project involves

The plans include:

  • A carefully designed two-storey side extension, with a new internal staircase replacing the existing external access
  • Refurbished crew facilities, plus dedicated training and office space
  • Private changing areas
  • Improved accessibility
  • Energy-efficiency upgrades, including replacement doors, windows and roofing
  • A base for the West Dorset lifeguard support function

Where things stand

Initial demolition, including removal of the side extension and the internal strip-out, is complete. That means the main construction phase is ready to begin this September.

Keeping the lifesaving service running

Throughout the works, the volunteer crew will continue to operate from a temporary station at the former Old Harbour Dive Centre. Lifeboat operations will carry on as normal, so there’s no interruption to the service that keeps people safe in and around Weymouth Bay.

Simon Kershaw, Weymouth RNLI’s volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager, described the project as “an exciting new chapter for Weymouth RNLI”. He also thanked the volunteers who moved the crew to the temporary station, and local neighbours for their patience during the disruption.

How the project is funded

The work is funded through public donations, legacies, charitable trusts and grants, philanthropic support and a local fundraising appeal. Weymouth RNLI’s volunteer fundraisers are still running events for the appeal and welcome anyone who’d like to help, whether by attending an event, organising their own or taking on a challenge.

We’re looking forward to getting started and to playing our part in the next chapter for this much-loved station.
